City Manager Stephen Jellie passes New York State Civil Service examination for Fire Chief
The City of Ogdensburg was notified today by the St. Lawrence County Department of Human Resources that City Manager / Fire Chief Stephen P. Jellie successfully passed the New York State Civil Service examination for Fire Chief with a score of 92. Mr. Jellie is the only candidate on the certified list sent to the City for consideration. Mr. Jellie was provisionally appointed to the position of Fire Chief at the same time he was appointed City Manager on July 9, 2020 due to both positions being vacant. In accordance with the Ogdensburg City Charter, the City Manager must fill-in for any vacant department head position and unlike all other department head positions, the police and fire chief positions come with specific New York State training and certification requirements that must be met for all types of employment appointments to include individuals serving provisionally in a role such as Mr. Jellie is doing. Mr. Jellie has extensive fire and emergency services education, certification and experience that includes serving at several locations as a career and volunteer fire chief over a 30 year career. Prior to be appointed City Manager / Fire Chief in the City of Ogdensburg, Mr. Jellie most recently served with the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a Team Leader in the Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT) Program.

I am not surprised at the results of the civil service examination as I have personally witnessed the veteran skill and expertise that Steve brings to the City each and every day, and I was present at the high-rise fire at Riverview Towers and watched him perform exceptionally as the Incident Commander. The City appreciates Steve’s willingness to serve our City at such a critical period in it’s history and I do hope he elects to remain serving the City of Ogdensburg as long as I am Mayor.
