![]() The department has a very pro-active fire prevention program. The NFPA "Learn Not to Burn" and "Risk Watch" programs have been very well received by area students and instructors alike. Additionally, firefighters visit classrooms throughout the year for such events as Fire Prevention Week, field and career days, CPR classes and the Celebrity Readers Program, to mention just a few. Also available is the NFPA program entitled "Remembering When". This program offers valuable fire prevention tips for senior citizens. Does a child you know, age 16 and under, have a fire setting problem? In 2002 the Ogdensburg Fire Department, with the assistance of St. Lawrence County officials, formed a juvenile firesetters program. The purpose of the program is to identify, counsel and refer at risk youths for early intervention. Call now and help prevent a tragedy in your home of the home of someone you know. Currently there are eight certified NYS Code Enforcement Officials at the department and one certified Fire Safety Technician. Besides assisting the City Planning & Development and Housing & Rehabilitation Departments with rental inspections, the Department's Code Enforcement Officials and firefighters conduct yearly fire inspections of places of public assembly such as businesses, churches, factories, retail stores, offices, etc. Each May the Department conducts a hydrant flushing program. All of the almost 400 hydrants in the City limits are opened and allowed to run until clear of rust and all other sediment. Any needed repairs are noted during the flushing and forwarded to the Department of Public Works. The flushing program lasts approximately three weeks. Local newspapers, radio station and cable channel 30 carry a weekly schedule of the areas affected. During the three weeks preceding the return to fall daylight savings time, firefighters canvas the City on a door-to-door basis offering to check resident's smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for proper operation. Batteries, if needed, are installed at no charge to residents. A smoke detector will be provided and installed for any resident who is not able to afford one. Residents not at home at the time of the smoke detector check are left an informational door hanger. The hanger advises residents to check their smoke detectors when they reset their clocks and to call the Fire Department should they need any assistance. Smoke and carbon monoxide detector checks, installations, etc. can be scheduled at any time of the year simply by contacting the department at the non-emergency number. We recommend a minimum of one smoke detector per floor as well as one in the cellar, garage, and attic areas. Carbon monoxide detectors are strongly recommended as well. We have a large variety of safety brochures on hand at the station. Please call us with your needs. Did you know that over 90% of child safety seats are either incorrectly installed or are not correctly sized for the child? The Ogdensburg Fire Department, in conjunction with the Ogdensburg Police Department and the St. Lawrence County Traffic Program, has been designated an official child safety seat fitting station. Certified technicians are available, by appointment, to fit your child's seat. Applications for complimentary seats are available by contacting Mary Davison of the St. Lawrence County Traffic Program at 379-2306. |
